Class 2 Blog 2026/27

07.10.2026
Class 2 have enjoyed another busy week packed with learning across the curriculum.
In maths, we have been exploring Roman numerals and learning how the Romans represented numbers using letters. We compared the Roman number system with the one we use today and thought about why Roman numerals can still be found around us. This links closely with our history learning and our class book, The Humans, as we considered how the achievements and ideas of ancient civilisations have helped shape the world we live in today.
French has been a particular highlight this week. The children have loved practising their language skills through games, especially Jacques a dit (Simon Says). They listened carefully to French instructions, identified different parts of the body and followed commands, all while building their confidence in speaking and understanding French.
In history, we travelled back to Ancient Greece to learn about Greek gods, goddesses and myths. We explored some of the stories that were important to the Ancient Greeks and discussed how their influence can still be seen today, from the Olympic Games to the language and ideas that continue to be part of modern life.
As always, it has been wonderful to see the children approaching their learning with enthusiasm, curiosity and plenty of smiles.

In History, we have been exploring beautiful buildings as part of our Ancient Greece topic. We learned that the Ancient Greeks developed three architectural styles called Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. After learning how to spot the different types of columns, the children enjoyed using the internet to search for famous buildings such as Buckingham Palace and the British Museum. They carefully examined photographs, looking closely at the columns and decorative features before deciding which style each building matched. There was lots of discussion as the children explained their ideas and justified their choices. It was great to see them applying their new knowledge and realising that Ancient Greek architecture still influences many of the buildings we see today.

In Maths, we have continued our work on place value. Year 3 pupils have been working with numbers up to 1,000, while Year 4 pupils have extended their understanding to numbers up to 10,000. One of the highlights of the week was playing 'Naughty or Nice', a place value game where the children rolled a die and had to think carefully about where to place each digit. The aim was to create a number that would beat their partner's, so they had to use plenty of strategy and mathematical thinking. The children quickly realised that choosing the right place value column was just as important as the number they rolled! To make the game even more exciting, they could choose the 'naughty' option and place their rolled digit into their partner's number instead, often ruining a carefully planned score. This led to lots of laughter, groans and tactical decision-making as the children tried to outwit one another.

What a fantastic week we've had in Class 2!

One of the highlights of our week was welcoming the peripatetic music teacher into school. The children had the opportunity to try a range of musical instruments and learn more about how they make different sounds. There was plenty of excitement as children had a go, listened carefully and explored something new. It was lovely to see the children's enthusiasm and confidence grow as they discovered instruments they might like to play again in the future. This was definitely a favourite part of the week for many of the children.

In English, we continued our work based on The Lost Thing. The children became advertising experts, creating persuasive posters for the Federal Department of Odds & Ends. They thought carefully about how to grab the reader's attention, using persuasive phrases, powerful vocabulary and rhetorical questions. The children absolutely loved drawing the strange, wonderful and sometimes hilarious items they were advertising. From games consoles and gadgets to much-loved pets and unusual treasures, their imaginations really shone through.

In Computing, the children continued developing their coding skills using Scratch. They learnt how computers make decisions using "if", "then" and "else" commands and explored how games can respond differently depending on a player's actions. There was lots of problem-solving, testing and improving as the children worked on their projects, showing perseverance when debugging their code.

Well done, Class 2, for another busy week of learning.

18.09.2026
This week, Class 2 have made a great start to lots of new learning. In Book Club, we explored some fascinating non-fiction texts about early humans and the Nubians. We practised using maps, illustrations and layouts to help us understand information and developed our skills in retrieving facts.

In History, we began our Ancient Greece topic and discovered that Ancient Greece was made up of many different city-states, including Athens and Sparta. The children enjoyed finding Greece on a map, learning where and when the Ancient Greeks lived and discussing some of the ways their ideas still influence our lives today.

Our English lessons have focused on The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan. Through discussion, drama and role play, the children stepped into the shoes of the characters before using their ideas in their writing. They explored how different characters might react to the mysterious creature and used dialogue, sound words and ambitious vocabulary to bring those reactions to life.

In Art, we launched our new mythology unit by learning about traditional, modern and contemporary art. We explored different versions of the story of George and the Dragon and discussed how artists can tell the same story in very different ways. The children very much enjoyed working collaboratively to recreate famous artworks as photographic tableau vivants, using expression, body language and teamwork to bring the images to life!

A Fantastic Start to the Term in Class 2

Class 2 have made a brilliant start to the new term. The children have come back ready to learn, full of enthusiasm and keen to get involved in everything we've been doing.

We started the week with some creative RE work linked to the Creation story. The children explored the idea of God's world being full of wonder before creating their own collage artwork. They carefully selected colours, shapes and materials to represent different parts of creation, thinking about how to layer textures and organise their designs. The classroom was full of focused conversations as the children shared ideas and helped one another make artistic choices.

In English, we have launched our new unit based on The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan, and the children have already been completely drawn into its unusual world. Rather than jumping straight into writing, we spent time studying the illustrations and discussing our first impressions. The children noticed tiny details, asked thoughtful questions and made some brilliant predictions about what might be happening.

One of the most interesting discussions centred around what it feels like to be different. The children considered how the mysterious creature in the story might feel when nobody seems to notice it or understand it. They showed great empathy as they talked about belonging, friendship and the importance of accepting people for who they are. It was wonderful to hear such mature and thoughtful ideas being shared.

We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude Class 2 have shown this week. They have been engaged, enthusiastic and eager to learn, making it a wonderful start to the year. We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead.
