In Design Technology, Class 2 have been busy creating their own information design posters, each focusing on a different aspect of Roman life. The children have shown great attention to detail in their designs and are excited to take their projects further by adding electrical components in the next lesson.
In English, we’ve started exploring our new text, The Mermaid of Zennor, written by Charles Causley, a celebrated Cornish poet, school teacher, and writer. His work is rich with folklore, legends, and magic, often inspired by his native Cornwall. The children have been captivated by the story and the stunning illustrations by Michael Foreman, which bring the tale to life beautifully.
In French, we’ve continued our topic on food! The children can now enthusiastically express which foods they like or dislike and are becoming increasingly skilled at using a bilingual dictionary to support their learning.

This week, Class 2 have been spreading festive cheer while thinking about the importance of community. Alongside their usual lessons, the children have been creating beautiful Christmas baubles for the Church Christmas Tree Festival, each one celebrating what matters most to them at school and in the wider community. They also wrote thoughtful Christmas letters to residents at Southlands, showing kindness and considering how they can make a positive impact on others during this special season. To add to the festive spirit, the children have been learning Christmas songs in French, which they’ve really enjoyed!
In maths, we’ve been working hard on times tables and exploring the links between multiplication and division, supporting National Curriculum aim for pupils to recall and use multiplication and division facts for all times tables up to 12 × 12, and to develop efficient written and mental methods. The children are making excellent progress with their times table knowledge—thank you to those who have been practising at home! It’s wonderful to see how this practice is helping them apply their skills to solve problems with increasing fluency.
Why not ask your child which bauble design they created or if they can sing you a line from their French Christmas song?

In French, we’ve been revising everything we learned last term, and it’s amazing how much the children have remembered. Their pronunciation is improving brilliantly, and they are growing in confidence when speaking in French.
This term in history, we are diving into the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians. The children were amazed to discover that while prehistoric Britons were living in Britain, the Egyptians were building incredible pyramids, developing a system of writing called hieroglyphics, and making remarkable advances in medicine and art. However, the children decided that even with those advances, they would still prefer not to live there—mainly because of the hot weather and desert conditions! It’s been a brilliant start to the topic, and we can’t wait to explore more.

In music, we’ve been focusing on adapting and transposing motifs with the theme of Romans. The children worked hard to sing in tune and in time—and had great fun performing all the actions that went along with the songs! Their enthusiasm made the lesson truly enjoyable.
In maths—wow! The children’s knowledge of their times tables has progressed so much this school year, and it’s really paying off as we begin our first block on multiplication and division. They are confidently applying their understanding to work with different types of numbers and in a wide range of contexts. Well done, Class 2!
Class 2 are thoroughly enjoying their history learning this term as they explore the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians. So far, the children have been amazed to discover that while prehistoric Britons were living in Britain, the Egyptians were already reading, writing, and creating magnificent works of art. This comparison has really helped the children understand the scale and importance of Egyptian achievements. The children have also learned about Egyptian gods and some of the founding pharaohs, showing great curiosity and enthusiasm. One topic that particularly caught their attention—although it was a little gruesome—was the process of mummification! The children were both intrigued as they discovered how the ancient Egyptians prepared bodies for the afterlife.
In art, the children have been ‘weathering’ paper to mimic ancient Egyptian papyrus before decorating it beautifully with hieroglyphics and patterns inspired by ancient textiles and detailed artefacts. The finished work is visually striking and show great care, creativity and attention to detail.

In Science, Class 2 have been learning about what plants need to grow healthily. We have discovered that not all plants need these things in the same quantity- for example, some plants need lots of sunlight and water, whereas others might not need as much.
We decided to investigate how much light radish plants need for healthy growth. We had to think carefully about how we could reduce the light each pot gets and how to keep our experiment fair. We put the same amount of soil and seeds in each pot and gave them the same amount of water. We have also kept them in the same place within the classroom, so they are at the same temperature. These are our control variables. To vary the light, we have put an opaque container over one pot, a translucent one over another and a transparent one over the third pot. This is our independent variable. Each week we will measure the height of the seedlings. This is our dependent variable.
We have made predictions about which pot we think will grow the healthiest. We will have to wait to find out if we were correct!
